VAUXHALL ZAFIRA (2005 to date)
THIS sector proved tough to decide. During the first round of judging, the Auto Express panel couldn't decide whether to back the previous version of the Zafira or the current incarnation.
In 2007, the old model took the top spot due to its massive supply and rock-bottom prices. But it now looks and feels dated whereas, despite its higher price, the new Zafira is still a great used buy.
While the handling isn't thrilling, the ride is composed and predictable. And the brakes are exceptional. The seating is ingenious and the cabin has more of a quality feel than most competitors'. Plus, the Zafira offers a reasonable amount of boot space alongside the practicality of seven seats - a rarity for an MPV.
COMMENDED
MAZDA 5 (2005 to date)
Price: £7,950-£12,750
IT trails rivals on economy, price and availability, but the Mazda puts a smile on your face like no other MPV. Great to drive - and the sliding side doors are very practical, too.
VW TOURAN (2003 to date)
Price: £5,900-£17,050
OUR 2006 champ is still commended, with its great diesels and well put together cabin. Dearer than most, but you get plenty of space, a cosseting ride and space for seven!
RENAULT GRAND SCENIC (2004 to date)
Price: £4,800-£9,950
THIS mid-size MPV has gone down a storm with buyers, as it guzzles families and luggage, too. Frugal diesels are best - hunt for a super-economical dCi in 1.5 or 1.9-litre form.
