Kilmarnock mum is an inspiration to others

A KILMARNOCK mum has won a top award for being an inspiration to others.

Susan Chan is, according to the Mums In Control organisation, ‘the most inspirational mumpreneur’ in Scotland!

Mumpreneurs are working mums who, of course, have family commitments, but also a vision to take their working lives forward, Susan said this week.

It’s claimed that mumpreneurs in the UK contribute £130billion to the UK economy, an achievement that they accomplish while also raising the next generation, running a home and often supporting their partners.

Mums in Control offers support and advice to working mums and those setting up their own business.

Susan Chan is founder of New Horizons Creative Solutions in Kilmarnock’s Melville Street where she practices hypnotherapy and life coaching. A mother of four grown-up children – Becky, 19, Rachael, 22, Donald, 23, and Sarah-Lee, 24 – Susan’s life has changed dramatically over the last 10 years and she has used her experience to work with and support others both within a business environment and by working with the local community.

She said: “Ten years ago my marriage broke up, leaving me homeless, with no money and having lost custody of my children.

“However with the help of my friends, and even strangers, I learned to trust and rebuild my life, including gaining custody of my children. I completed a degree and gained experience working with those with mental health and addiction problems, as well as with the homeless.”

In addition to running New Horizons, she carries out community work, including involvement with cancer and mental health charities.

“After I was given a second chance, I feel I owe it to others to give something back,” said Susan. “People were very kind to me when I had lost my confidence.”

As well as giving her business more exposure, the well-deserved award also brings a certificate and a trophy Susan’s way.

The current edition of Mums in Control magazine, which features Susan’ story, is available free in local shops and supermarkets.

Said Nikki Niven, editor of Mums in Control magazine, Kilmarnock and Ayr said: ‘’I am absolutely delighted that Susan has received this accolade. Mums who run their own business work incredibly hard. Susan is an inspiration to all working mums.”
