YOUNG people and students are being asked to volunteer in the Kilmarnock Barnardo’s charity shop ahead of the launch of ‘Believe in Children’ week.
The charity hopes young people will volunteer to learn new skills and gain experience as the recession makes it more difficult for young people to land jobs.
‘Believe in Children’ week runs from Monday, July 6, to Sunday, July 12. Volunteers have a choice of working hours to suit at the Queen Street shop and can help with a range of tasks from creating window displays and sorting stock to serving customers and collecting goods.
Scotland has seen a 72 per cent rise in Jobseekers Allowance claimants among 18 to 24-year-olds in the past year.
More than 37,000 young people are failing to find work in the tough economic climate and are signing on at a cost to the taxpayer of £1,890,245 a week.
