Kilmarnock's brand new Tesco Extra opens

THE giant Tesco Extra superstore in Kilmarnock’s West Shaw Street opened on Monday and welcomed thousands of shoppers on a busy first day.

And staff celebrated the grand opening by donating £1000 to Tesco’s charity of the year, the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.

The store was officially opened by Kilmarnock FC goalkeeper, Alan Combe, who cut the ribbon with Provost Stephanie Young, local councillors and the Centrestage Music Theatre Company also in attendance.

Customers were greeted with champagne celebrations and performances from Centrestage throughout the morning.

Centrestage also received a gift from the store in the form of new radio microphones. Paul Mathieson of the theatre company said: “We are delighted with the generous donation of the new microphones, they will go a long way in improving the sound quality of our performances.

Store Manager Paul Nally said: “I am delighted that Centrestage came to join in the celebrations with us. The vocal group sounded great an we were very impressed with their performances, as were customers.

“Our first day was brilliant. The store was busy and customer feedback was great, and I am very proud of my staff who worked hard to make the day a success.

“I hope that our customers continue to enjoy the new store and all its services, and I look forward to the store playing an active role in the local community.”

The launch celebrations do not end there. This Saturday, June 20, between 10am and 4pm, there will be a barbeque food tasting event, face painters and children’s entertainers at the store, all free of charge.

The store and its petrol station are both open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
