Feast of fine classes at new Kilmarnock cook school

MICHELIN-star chef Steven Doherty is to be the main man at Kilmarnock’s new cookery school.

He has been appointed managing director of the cookery school at Braehead Foods’ new factory in Moorfield Industrial Estate, on the outskirts of the town.

Classes at the school, due to open in February, are selling out fast.

Steven, who was the first British person to be a head chef at a three Michelin-star restaurant, has big plans for the cookery school.

He said: “It is the wish of the company’s managing director Craig Stevenson and myself to establish Braehead’s cook school as one of the leading cook schools in Scotland and the UK within the next three years.”

Steven, who is a judge for Gordon Ramsay’s scholarship scheme, has already signed up some of the country’s top chefs to teach trainee chefs at the school by holding master-classes.

And the general public are being invited to come and share the kitchen with their favourite chef in ‘demo and dine’ classes.

Steven’s right-hand man Jason McNelly, who has 16 years of experience in the kitchen, will be in charge of the day-to-day running of the cookery school.

Braehead Foods, which has an annual turnover of £6million, is the country’s leading supplier of quality meat, game and deli foods.

The company’s new 35,000ft factory will also have a restaurant and a shop.

Steven and Jason will be working to establish the restaurant as a top venue for corporate hospitality and fine dining.

Bookings are now being taken for the cookery school classes, which range in price from £35 to £1500.
