East Ayrshire Council wins award for streetsport cage project

EAST Ayrshire Council has won a special award for its streetsport cage project.

The project team was presented with a finalists’ certificate of achievement at the recent local government channel awards, held in Bournemouth.

The sports cage scheme – which has brought local sports facilities to estates and communities throughout East Ayrshire – was named one of the top six most innovative projects in the UK.

The award is the third honour the project has received this year. The team gained a silver award as part of the COSLA excellence awards and reaching the finals of the Britain-wide Municipal Journal awards.

Councillor Kathy Morrice, East Ayrshire’s spokeswoman for community well-being said: “It was a real honour for the team from East Ayrshire to gain this award for a project that is literally taking sport to the doorsteps of young people.

“I’m delighted with the award and for the team themselves, but the main thing is that these facilities are having a positive impact on so many of our young people and long may that continue.”

Meanwhile, a range of programmes are currently underway at local streetsport cages including football and basketball events, cheerleading championships and opportunities for local people to become volunteers and leaders.
