Kilmarnock Standard girls in pole position

THE Standard girls are not known for being shy and retiring, so when the idea of a pole dancing party was suggested there was a predictable flurry of interest.

Whether the promise of grub and booze afterwards was the real draw is unclear, but it was a meek, slightly nervous bunch that met at Kilmarnock Fitness Centre on Saturday morning.

But soon instructor Claire Stuart put us all at our ease, emphasising this fast-growing craze is a simply way of getting fit while having great fun – not about sleazy dancing for men in dimly lit clubs. Claire, who is also the manager of the Rugby Park gym, said: “Our polefit classes are a great way of getting fit, a fun alternative to the gym and a great all over body workout. Your upper body, abs and calves all benefit.

“And best of all it’s a real confidence booster and a great laugh into the bargain.”

The Standard girls – Clair, Lizzie, Fiona, Mary and Heather, along with pals Jan and Joanna – had a brilliant time trying out moves, spins and turns.

Claire said: “What’s nice about the classes is the feeling of sisterhood and friendship they generate, which you don’t always get at traditional exercise classes. People who don’t know each other at the beginning become great friends through encouraging each other.

“You don’t have to be super-fit to do the classes either. People of all shapes, sizes and abilities can do most of the basic moves and tricks. It’s the ultimate way to reveal your inner goddess.”

There was certainly a lot of diva-esque behaviour on display on Saturday morning and it was a great way to start a girly day out.

Polefit parties can be booked for up to 15 friends looking for a girls’ day out with a difference.

The gym is holding a taster workshop, which is similar to the parties, on Saturday, July 23, which is an ideal way of learning a few moves and tricks, without having to commit to a course.

But if you are confident pole dancing is for you, then the next beginners’ courses start on Wednesday, August 6, and Thursday, August 7.

Claire said: “We are really trying to change pole dancing’s image with these classes and would say to any woman who wants to try it but feels a bit nervous, don’t worry, everyone does.

“The best bit about teaching the polefit classes is seeing everyone at the end of their first class. They always come in nervous and finish laughing and joking with each other and looking so happy and confident. It’s brilliant.”
