HAVING lost their opening two games, Killie Devils, the under 16s team, were very keen to get a good result in the Capital to boost their confidence.
Facing them were a less experienced however enthusiastic Murrayfield team playing four lines.
From face off, Devils went on to the attack, but it was Murrayfield who forced the first save of the game from Killie stopper Chris Coles.
Killie nerves were calmed, however, on three minutes when Martin McPhail and Derek Paton linked to open the Devils account. Six minutes later the scoreline was doubled, though despite having a number of shots on goal, Killie were unable to add any further scores prior to the break.
With everything still to play for, the second period had barely began when a misplaced clearance by a Murrayfield defender found Derek Paton three feet from goal from where he couldn’t miss. A further goal two minutes later and the Devils were well placed to win.
Not to be outdone, the defence got into the scoring act when Dylan Ogden netted an excellent slapshot from the blue line after 29 minutes.
Martin McPhail completed the scoring with a nice move three minutes from the end.
With strong performances from an under-manned defence and the ever reliable net minder Chris Coles, Killie deserved their win.
Devil's Man of the Match was Derek Paton
Scorers: D. Paton (4+1), M McPhail (1+4), D Ogden (1), F Kerr (0+2)
Kilmarnock Lightning (U14s) 2
North Ayr 3
DESPITE regular shots on goal, Kilmarnock Lightning could not net a win against North Ayr.
Coach Duncan Speirs was pleased with his team and praised their efforts on goal.
Kilmarnock’s Dylan Notman opened the scoring on seven minutes, but North Ayr found the net in the last minute of the first period making the scores all level.
North Ayr scored a further two goals in the first five minutes of the second period putting the pressure back onto Kilmarnock.
Despite a goal from Duncan Speirs a few minutes later, the Kilmarnock side could not get that elusive equaliser.
Kilmarnock's Man of the Match was netminder Andrew Little for his excellent performance during the game.
Kirkcaldy 5
Kilmarnock Whirlwinds (U10s) 5
KILMARNOCK’S youngest team, the Whirlwinds, took to the Kirkcaldy Ice Rink for their first match of this season last Sunday.
It was an exciting game and all the players thoroughly enjoyed the chance to show off their skills at this friendly match.
The Whirlwinds were up three goals at the end of the first period and scored a further two in the second period.
However the Kirkcaldy side fought back and made the game all level by the end of the second period. All five Whirlwinds goals were scored by Jordan Buesa who was clearly on fine form as were his team mates. Ben Crosby and Mark Solerod also did their team proud on this their first match.
Man of the Match went to netminder Liam Thomas who guested for the Whirlwinds alongside Greig Morrison, Charles Fyfe, Lewis Leslie and Jo Pieroni.
