Latest Ayrshire fishing: December 20

COYLE WATER FISHERY (Coylton): excellent fishing over the past week even with the very poor conditions. The fish have been rising during the calmer moments and have taken drys.

Mr Welsh did well taking one and releasing five. Hugh Munro, over a couple of visits, released into double figures. Mr Kerr took two for 6lbs 4oz, Mr Rocks two for 6lbs, pals Stewart and Allister released 11 between them.

Bets tactics are floating lines fishing bloodworms and buzzers, Intermediates fished with a variety of lures are also taking fish when they are down.

The bait pond has been quiet with a lack of anglers so fish have been quick to switch onto natural foods but for those who have braved the weather, fish have been there to be caught.

There are still a few places available for the Boxing Day fun competition with every angler getting a prize. Lunch is included.

BURNS TROUT FISHERY (Tarbolton): the fishery will be open as normal throughout the festive period with the exception of Christmas Day when it will be open from 10am to 2pm.

Fly pond: Jim Forwell, two for 5lb, Gary Clarke, two for 5lb, Tom Atkinson, four for 10lb, Titch, four for 9lb 8oz, James Calderwood, two for 4lb 2oz.

Bait pond: Colin Harrell, four for 8lb 8oz, Bill Fiffe, two for 4lb 6oz, Ben Galloway, two for 4lb 12oz, M. Lindsay, five for 10lb 14oz, Kim Dunnachie, two for 4lb 4oz.

SPRINGWATER FISHERY (Dalrymple): fly pond was quiet last week but fared well for those who fished black and green lures working best.

Bait pond fishing extremely well. Young Robert Dunnachie from Ayr was among the fish again with five for 12lb 10oz. Coarse pond fishing well. Jim Anderson had a good day with six carp, three skimmers and loads of silver fish.

The fishery was open on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. There are still places left for the Mary Scott memorial fly competition. Merry Christmas and a good New Year from everyone at Springwater.

MIDDLETON (Largs): fishing has been pretty good for the anglers who braved the elements, most fish coming to either the sightbob with various blob worm imitations or intermediates with small lures.

Catches: J. Watson three for 9lb, G McCormack two for 6lb 8oz, A Stewart three for 9lb, D. Findlay and son four for 10lb and released two, C Orr two for 4lb 14oz and released two, A. Montgomerie two for 5lb 12oz.

Catch and release: J. Tudhope released five, J. Stevens released fiver, S. Pringle and son released 21, P. Edge released five, D. Szulc released five, J. Dunbar released four, R. Sambells released eight, C Sutherland released eight, S Milne released 11.

Best flies: Pink Bloodworm, Orange Bloodworm, Red Bloodworm, Chartreuse Blob, Orange Blob, Red Head Damsel, Black/Orange Cats Whisker. Contact the fishery on 01475 689692.

LAWFIELD TROUT FISHERY (Kilmacolm): wild weather kept most anglers at home but the diehards that ventured out caught plenty of hard fighting trout. Fish around 3lbs 8oz were common place in catches.

Mr Hendry two for 4lbs 4oz, Bobby Quinn eight, J. Currie five, Tommy Wedlock four, Stevie Wedlock four and Dean Monaghan 16. Top flies have been beaded nymphs fished deep, redhead damsels and buzzers fished under an indicator. Contact Billy on 01505 874182.

HOWWOOD (Paisley): the water fished well this past week with many anglers into double figures. Top flies were Redhead damsels, orange blob and okay dokay.

Mr Ferguson two for 3lbs 12oz and eight returned, G. Steele five for 14lbs, A. Early seven, Mr McNab two for 3lbs 12oz, E. Boyd six, A. Masland four for 9lbs, J. Grierson three for 8lbs, D. Gilmour two for 5lbs, G. Luke five for 11lbs 12oz, R. Baker three for 7lbs 8oz, Mr Casey two for 5lbs 8oz and J. Murney four for 8lbs 8oz.

The bait competition on Sunday was won by G. Steele with 11 for 24lbs 12oz, second was Charlie Marsano with 10 for 23lbs and third was D. Gordon nine for 21lbs. The heaviest fish was caught by R. Baker junior weighing 6lbs 8oz. In total 32 rods caught 100 fish for 233lbs 8oz. The next bait competition is on Sunday January 4 from 9.30am to 3.30pm. Contact John on 01505 702688.
