Hurlford Utd aim to bounce right back from relegation

RELEGATED Hurlford United will be back in the First Division as soon as possible.

And beleagured boss John Crawford said he is the man to lead the team to promotion next season.

Said Crawford: “This is the first time in my career that I’ve been relegated, and this does not sit well with me.

“The good news is we have a nucleus of players who have already vowed to stay at Hurlford and do their utmost to get us back into the Super First Division next year.”

There has been some moving and shaking behind the scenes at Blair Park and a number of personnel have left.

Coach Bill Whiteford, who had been with the club for a season, has moved on, while keeper Darren Wilson, defender Robert Burgess, striker Michael Fulton, and former club captain Gary Russell have been put on the transfer list.

It’s the end of an era for striker Scott McGregor too, as he hangs up his boots after nine years of service to Hurlford United.

McGregor has decided to retire from football, and the club’s thanks go with him as he endeavours to build up his new business.

Said Crawford: “Scott leaves with our very best wishes. He has been a tremendous servant to the club, over nine years.”

Two new coaches have been appointed, Charlie Adams, a current Hurlford player, and Alan Paul.

Alan is also a former player at Blair Park, and has had stints with Glenafton and Beith.

The pair will lead the training sessions, while Ossie Findlay will stay on too, specialising in one-to -one coaching.

Bobby McCorriston remains as goalkeeping coach and physio, as does John Kirkwood, who is club scout.

Said Crawford: “We’ve got a great backroom team in place and I am particularly delighted with the appointment of Charlie and Alan, who both have passion and enthusiasm for the game, and this should rub off on the players.

“On the players front we have 10 signed professionals and it would be my aim to boost that core group with an additional six players.

“Our priorities would be a new keeper, a left back and a left-sided midfielder, and at least one striker, possibly two, as we have plenty of cover in other areas.”

Three friendly games have been organised in the close season.

Hurlford will be at home to Newmains at 2pm on Saturday, July 18, at home to Neilston on Wednesday, July 22, at 7pm and at home to Royal Albert on Saturday, July 25, at 2pm.
