Double for Ayr County bowlers

AYRSHIRE have joined Ayr County in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cities and Counties Championship.

They sealed their Hamilton Trophy place with a win or bust 115-100 over Lanarkshire West at Kilwinning. But even then, they had to await the result of the Stirlingshire v Dumbartonshire West game to ensure qualification.

The result was in doubt up until the final four ends when Ayrshire found that little bit extra and opened a 15-shot lead. Ayrshire now travel to Armadale BC to play east league winners West Lothian on Sunday, July 5, at 1pm.

Ayr County, having already qualified, travelled to meet their joint league leaders, Lanarkshire South, at Dalserf. There was a lack of urgency about the play and when County slackened off too early they lost 122-109.

County scores first: David Conway 16, Philip Forrest 16; Jim Hume 12, Ian Campbell 23; Jim Fleming 21, Robert Grant 25; Graham Peacock 26, John Simpson 11; Hugh McCrindle 19, Alex McIntyre 19; James Gribben 15, Jim McCann 28.

County now meet winners of the north league, Angus, at Doune Castle BC, also on Sunday, July 5, at 1pm. Buses for both ties will leave Ayr at 10am, and Kilmarnock at 10.30am.

SPRINGHILL Bowling Club hosted the West District Finals of the Ayrshire Bowling Association last Thursday when a large turnout of spectators witnessed some excellent play.

In the singles competition D McHarg of Dreghorn BC had a 21-15 win over M Kerr from Girdle Toll BC.

The other results were: Junior Singles – G Wells (Kilmaurs BC) 21, S Fleming (Stewarton BC) 11; Secretaries – B Drummond (Kilmarnock Portland BC) 21, W Jardine (Dundonald BC) 12.

Pairs – S Stewart and J Bell (Howard Park BC) 14, J Anderson and G King (North West BC) 13; Triples – J Lewis, D Ross and J McCabe (Crosshouse BC) 16, J McPhail, G McCulley and G Thomas (Springside BC) 6.

Fours – S Fulton, C Ritchie, C Howie and P Foster (Troon Portland BC) 20, A Storrie, D Lindsay, B McKerroll and D Storrie ((Springside BC) 8.

Senior Triples – R Adam, R Henderson and J Reid (Dreghorn BC) 12, D Warnock, D Jamieson and I Brown (Riccarton BC) 11.

In the Youths Singles played at Townholm BC last Saturday, R Gill (Riccarton BC) beat A Weir (Prestwick BC) 21-10.
