Kilmarnock Harriers do well in Scottish

THE under-13 Kilmarnock Harriers girls’ ‘A’ team achieved an excellent fourth place in the Bank of Scotland 3 x 800m Junior Relay Championships, which were held last week at Grangemouth.

Coming second in their heat with a time of 8.15.1, Harriers Brogan Wallace, Lorne Kerr and Fern Wales went on to run 10 seconds faster in the final, crossing the line in 8.05.73.

By doing so, they beat teams such as Edinburgh AC, Victoria Park and Giffnock AAC, who are leading the Young Athletes League.

This achievement is in line with the consistent results the young girls have shown in the recent two Scottish Young Athletes league meetings, where the Killie under-13 girls were always placed among the top 800m runners.

Also taking part in the same age group were Chloe Slinger, Holly Dobson and Eillidh Griffin in the B team.

They ran 9.29.9 and finished fifth in their heat, while the under-13 boys team finished in 8.51.3, sixth in their heat.

Running in the under-15 age group were Bethany Ross, Eve Kerr and Gemma McCutcheon. Gemma — an under-13 athlete — stepped up to the under-15s at short notice.

The girls finished fourth in their heat in a time of 7.41.8 and qualified for the final, where they ran an equally impressive race in a time of 7.46.15 to finish in seventh place.

The under-17 men’s team of Ross Connelly, Dylan Chester, Greg Leyden and Grant Beattie took part in the 4 x 400m relay and finished seventh in a time of 4.01.18.

Fern Wales took part in the recent Stranraer Junior 1.4K race. A group of 17 young people lined up for the 10/11 years race on an extremely hot, sunny afternoon. Fern went off with the boys, tucking in behind the leading male runner after the first 200m.

She maintained this position for the remaining three laps to come home first girl in a great time of 5 mins 14 secs and retain her title for the second year in a row.

A number of athletes headed to Dam Park last Wednesday to take part in the Open Graded meeting.

Full results are unavailable at this moment, but a number of Kilmarnock athletes took part in the 3000m, and these results were: Men: 2nd Iain Connell -9.23.9 , 5th James Wales - 9.42.7, 6th Dylan Chester - 10.07.9 , 8th L James McDerment - 10.50.0 , 10th Kenny Wales - 11.28.2

Women: 2nd Kara Tait - 10.46.2, 3rd Lauren Campbell - 11.36.5.

Harold Bartl took part in the Greaves Festival of Running at Giffnock recently, and ran well. In the 5K, Harold dipped under the 20-minute barrier for the first time in a while, stopping the clock in 19.55 for 12th place, which suggests he isn’t too far away from his sub 40-minute target for the 10K which he hopes to achieve this year.

The 100K fundraiser on Saturday in aid of club funds went well. A number of members of all ages and parents supported the event, and thanks go to all involved as well as the huge number of people who sponsored the day.

Sunday sees the next instalment of the Harriers Road Racing Championship, the Arran Half Marathon.

At the moment, the top three in each category are: Women: 1st Clair Murray, 2nd Liz McDerment, 2nd Avryl Cornforth. Men: 1st Les McDerment, 2nd Harold Bartl, 3rd Keith Haining.

For anyone who runs, or who is thinking of taking up the sport, the Harriers is the place to be. A number of groups are available for people of all abilities, and Scott Ellis is the meeting point. The club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm and everyone is always made welcome. Full details on www.kilmarnock harriers. com
