Ice hockey: Kilmarnock Storm forced to call off game

KILMARNOCK Storm’s league game against Solway had to be abandoned after the ice resurfacing machine broke down on the rink.

With the game balanced at one each after the first period, the Zamboni got stuck in reverse and despite several attempts to recover it the game had to be called off.

Storm coach Stuart Wilson said: “It was a disappointing end to the weekend as the game was shaping up well.

“However the correct decision was made, and both teams went away knowing the outcome.”

The Storm contacted the Scottish Ice Hockey board and the game will be rescheduled at a later date.

The Storm have a weekend off and then play Dundee Tigers at the Galleon Centre on Sunday, February 14 at 2.30pm.

THE Tornadoes faced top of the league Dundee Stars on Saturday.

This was expected to be a difficult game to win, but the Tornadoes went out with enthusiasm and self-belief.

The game began at a fast and furious pace that was exciting to watch.

Tornadoes seemed to have the edge as Scott Snaddon opened the scoring after being set up by fine play from Ronan McCready and Tom Watson.

A minute later and Tom put them 2-0 up with a solo effort.

Dundee stepped up their game with a reply just a minute later and two more before the break giving them a 3-2 lead at the end of the period.

The cracks were beginning to show in a tiring Tornadoes who were struggling against a well-organised, experienced Dundee outfit.

The second half began with Dundee scoring quickly and another two within five minutes taking the score to 6-2 with 15 minutes left to play.

Dundee applied constant pressure and defencemen Behn Kerr and Jack Gemmell were running out of steam.

Dundee had a depth of squad that Killie could not compete with. The boys were exhausted and frustrations began to show when Tom Watson took a 10-minute misconduct penalty for hitting the puck off the boards after the whistle.

With Behn also in the penalty box for two minutes and Jack out through injury the Tornadoes dug deep with fine play from Dillon Robertson and Struan Forbes.

The team played hard and combined with some solid netminding by Angus Laing prevented Dundee from scoring again until the last 15 seconds of play.

The final score of 7-2 did not reflect the sterling effort the Tornadoes had put into the match.

Man of the match: Scott Snaddon.

Stats: Tom Watson (1-1), Scott Snaddon (1), Ronan McCready (0-1).

The home side took the lead in the second period when Martin McPhail converted a chance after good work from Andrew Boyle and Liam McGarry.

However, the Stars quickly equalised, ending the second period 1-1.

Dundee started the brighter of the two teams in the third and created several chances but failed to convert any.

The Kilmarnock side took the lead when Scott Wright and McGarry combined for McPhail to grab his second. The Stars pressed, but in the final seconds, Callum Boyd broke free to score and wrap up an excellent 3-1 win.

This result puts the Kilmarnock team at the top of the league with three games to play.
