Nuclear option is too costly

DES BROWNE MP said in his letter to the Standard last week that the New Labour Government has provided a budget to rescue Britain from the worse recession since the 1930s.

However, Des forgets to say that one of the main reasons why the recession is so bad is because his New Labour Government allowed City Fat Cats and the banking system to get out of control through the reluctance to regulate and control these elements of our economy.

Whatever view is taken of the causes of our current economic problems there is still a great deal of uncertainty about whether the Government's recent measures will pull us out of the mess we are currently in.

One very sensible measure New Labour could do to help our economy would be to stop spending £2 billion a year on Britain's Trident nuclear weapons system. This could be done by abandoning plans to replace the current Trident system and instead spend the money on decent things like schools, hospitals, housing and jobs.

If New Labour got rid of the current Trident nuclear weapons system and abandoned plans to replace it they would be acting in the best interests of our economy and world peace. It would also go some way to atoning for the disgraceful and illegal war they waged in Iraq which cost the lives of so many innocent people.
