IN October 2007 I wrote to Strathclyde Police regarding the speed limit on Grassyards Road, Kilmarnock.
My letter was forwarded to the local Roads Department. I had requested for the top end of the road to be changed from the current 30mph to the same as the bottom area which is 20mph.
Their reply was as follows: They had no plans at present to extend the 20mph on this road, however, once the new school was in use, traffic flows, parking and road safety issues would be assessed and any required measures implemented subject to funding.
So can I suggest to the department that now that the school is up and running, they examine the signs north of New Farm Loch where not one, but three signs encourage motorists to exit the A77 using the slip road into the large housing scheme that is New Farm Loch and down past the rear entrance of the local primary school and then in the direction of the new school’s main entrances.
Meanwhile the main road into Kilmarnock via the Beansburn area and without any schools, remains quiet in comparison, and if the department concerned is still not convinced about the upsurge of traffic and the speeding of the traffic on Grassyards Road then they should consult the four lollipop persons on daily duty who repeatedly dodge the motorists who fail to stop when the attendants request them to do so, or the local senior citizens who on a daily basis run the gauntlet trying to cross this road.
