Man held over death of girl in 1986

A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a schoolgirl 26 years ago.

Elaine Doyle, 16, died on her way home from a disco in Greenock, Inverclyde, on June 1 1986.

Her body was found the next day in a lane off Ardgowan Street, less than 50 yards from her home.

Strathclyde Police, who launched a fresh appeal in 2011, say they have arrested a 48-year-old man.

A force spokeswoman said: "Police can confirm that following a police operation, officers arrested a 48-year-old man in connection with the death of 16-year-old Elaine Doyle. The man is presently detained in police custody."

Elaine was last seen alive by two friends in Hamilton Way after she left a disco in the town's Laird Street.

The man will appear at Greenock Sheriff Court on Monday.
