MSPs to hear from top economist

A Nobel prize-winning economist is set to give evidence to the Scottish Parliament.

Professor Joseph Stiglitz, a member of Alex Salmond's Council of Economic Advisers, will be questioned via videolink by Holyrood's Economy Committee.

The economist, who has also advised the French and US governments, will give his views on alternatives to gross domestic product (GDP) as a means of measuring economic performance.

Green MSP Alison Johnstone said she hopes Prof Stiglitz will prompt "SNP ministers and the other opposition parties to review their relentless focus on growth".

Ms Johnstone, a member of the Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee, said: "Economic recovery should be about improving people's quality of life, rather than offering tax cuts to big business.

"Scottish Greens have long said a nation's success should be judged on factors like health, well being and social equality.

"The public is fed up hearing about bankers' bonuses and tax-dodging companies while poverty continues to worsen. The time for an economy with ethics has come."

Earlier this month committee convener Murdo Fraser said he was delighted that MSPs are getting the chance to quiz Prof Stiglitz.

The economist is a "world-renowned academic who has advised the French and American governments as well as the World Bank and the United Nations", he said.

"His expertise in alternative measures of economic growth is unparalleled and our committee is delighted that he will inform our understanding of this subject."
