Teacher training places to be cut

About 1,500 teacher training places are to be axed next year, it was announced.

Trainee primary teaching numbers will fall by more than half, bearing the brunt of the cuts, according to Scottish Funding Council figures.

The announcement prompted an angry reaction from student leaders who called for an end to a "boom and bust method" to teacher training.
