Thousands of Scots could miss out on a place at university after applications increased by almost a third, student leaders warned.
Figures from the applications clearing organisation Ucas showed that by the main January deadline 38,763 Scots had applied for degree courses, up 31.2% on last year.
Most applications, 28,967, were from people aged 20 and under but the number of older people wanting to go into higher education increased sharply.
