Police numbers now above 17,000

The number of police officers in Scotland has risen above 17,000 for the first time, according to official figures.

Statistics showed that at the end of March this year there were a record 17,408 police officers employed across the country.

That is 373 more than at the end of December last year and is an increase of 821 from March 2008.
