Kilmaurs Primary pupils take on the litter louts

CLEAN living pupils at Kilmaurs Primary School were fed up looking at litter and dog dirt on the lane to their playpark.

The primary seven pupils armed with litter pickers, gloves and bin bags cleared up Midgie Lane leading to the town’s Morton Park.

Pupils got some help from the countryside rangers and neighbours to replace hedges and sort the broken fences.

But getting rid of the dog dirt proved to be a big problem.

Clever pupils wrote to East Ayrshire Council and asked the authority to fit a bin along with dog dirt bags in the lane – and the council granted their wish.

Kilmaurs councillor John MacKay said: “These young people are making such a positive contribution to their community, the council felt it was important to support their efforts as far as possible.”

Council enforcement officers will regularly patrol the lane to make sure locals are using the bin.

Mr MacKay said: “I’m sure that local residents will appreciate just how much effort the young people have made and support them by making use of the bins provided.”
