Charity worker posed as cop to get woman to move into the slow lane on A77

A CHARITY worker used flashing blue lights and a siren to get a female driver to move into the slow lane on the A77 near Kilmarnock.

Ian Scott became fed up with the woman motorist who was going at 40mph in the outside lane of the 70mph dual carriageway.

The Red Cross worker still had on a high-visibility jacket from an earlier stint as a first aider in Glasgow.

The woman driver pulled into the inside lane, fearing she was being stopped by the police.

But after Scott, 58, sped off, her boyfriend called police to report him, and he was later stopped by traffic cops.

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court, Scott pleaded guilty to impersonating a police officer, driving carelessly, leaving no stopping distance and forcing the woman to pull over last November.

He was given 210 hours community service, fined £200 and banned for six months.

But outside the court, the Stranraer man remained defiant and said: “She was in the fast lane doing 40mph so I put the light on to get her to move out of the way.

“I told people it was a moment of madness, but they didn’t believe me.”
