CRAZY road racers came close to causing a serious accident in Kilmarnock on Friday night.
Two speeding drivers, one in a blue Volkswagen Polo and one in a dark coloured Ford Ka, sped along Blacksyke Avenue in Shortlees side-by-side.
The Ka mounted the pavement at one stage, forcing an elderly female pedestrian onto the road – where the Polo missed her by inches.
Both cars then roared off.
It happened at around 7.45pm, but just a couple of hours earlier a blue Polo, with a registration number close to SA02 ***, and thought to be the same car, had been driven at high speed, also in the Shortlees area.
The driver failed to stop for a marked police vehicle on this occasion and again made off.
He is described as being aged between 18 and 25, stockily built, with spiky dark brown hair. He had on a pair of dark square-framed glasses.
Police say there was a total disregard for the safety of other road users and pedestrians in both incidents.
Fortunately the 60-year-old woman walking on the pavement at the time of the second incident was unhurt, but badly shaken by her experience.
Said PC Craig Wallace who works in the Shortlees area for the community policing team: “The manner of driving in both these incidents was extreme. The Volkswagon Polo nearly hit the woman pedestrian in Blacksyke Avenue, and this could easily have resulted in serious injuries.”
It’s understood there were people in the street at some stage of the senseless ‘race’, and police are appealing for them to come forward.
Any information from local residents as to the identities of the drivers or the vehicles should be given to PC Wallace who can be contacted on 01563 505000.
