KILMARNOCK’S new showpiece athletics facility has been named.
Councillors last week endorsed a proposal to name the Olympic-standard facility ‘Ayrshire Athletics Arena, Kilmarnock’.
Finance director Alex McPhee told last week’s meeting of East Ayrshire’s cabinet that work on the £6½ million project in Queens Drive had been hit by “a number of unforeseen issues”.
These included the removal of Japanese knotweed and the installation of an electrical sub-station which, between them, added £230,000 to the cost of the scheme. But cabinet members got the good news that the extra spending was more than compensated for by a £500,000 grant from SportScotland.
The windfall will be used to upgrade the facilities proposed at the arena. Planned improvements include a covered spectator area.
