Purls of wisdom at knitting club
A NEW after-school club at St Andrew’s Primary has the fun all stitched up.
Children aged five to 12 have signed up to be part of the school’s knitting club, which has grown to full capacity since it started last September.
The club, which meets every Tuesday, is the brainchild of teacher Miriska Campbell, herself a keen knitter, who learned the craft as a child.
Dubbed ‘Miss Campbell’s Knitting Bee’, the club now has 24 members from all classes in the school – including three boys.
Miss Campbell said: “I had a similar club in my previous job and I just thought it would be good to use my skills again here at St Andrew’s.
“The children have embraced the idea totally and have enjoyed learning how to knit and making new things.”
The older children are now so skilled in the art they can help the younger ones.
Miss Campbell added: “There are different levels of ability. The little ones get to work on little things that can help their finer motor skills, while the older ones can get to grips with more intricate pieces of work. One of the most impressive things was when a little girl worked so hard on her scarf she took it home to finish it.
“Their committment is great and we are all enjoying our time in the knitting bee.”
