Cycling hero inspires college students

CYCLING superstar Graeme Obree popped into Kilmarnock College this week to inspire students to academic glory.

The two-time world record holder and British Cycling Hall of Fame entrant visited the Personal Empowerment Zone (PEZ) and Prince’s Trust students.

Obree, 44, gave an inspirational speech to the students at Kilmarnock College about his life in the fast lane and how he faced up to professional and personal problems throughout his career.

Obree, whose life was depicted in the movie ‘The Flying Scotsman’, spoke to nearly 50 PEZ and Prince’s Trust students on how he had to overcome disappointment in his career in order to succeed.

His advice comes at a time when the Intermediate 1 students will be deciding on their own individual career paths.

Obree said: “I think it is important for students to stay motivated and have a positive outlook on life. There are opportunities in life for those who look for them and I believe if you work hard and follow your dreams anything can be achieved.

“Throughout my career I have had to deal with setbacks and failures, however I found that if you are dedicated, determined and ambitious, the rewards are worth the effort.

“In my first attempt to beat the world hour record I failed. However, I got back on my bike the next day and the record was mine. When my time was subsequently beaten, I trained harder and created a new world record.”

Fiona Walterson, learner engagement assistant at Kilmarnock College, said: “Graeme Obree’s visit was great for the PEZ and Prince’s Trust students as they have just finished their courses and are looking to take the next step in their education and careers.

“He gave a lot of encouragement to the students and I hope they will apply his advice, and the new skills they have learned on their courses, into developing their own futures.”

The PEZ students have just completed qualifications in communication, numeracy, local investigations and enterprise.

These core skills will help students to progress onto a vocational college course or employment. The Prince’s Trust course runs for 12 weeks and develops core skills, self confidence and motivation and team building.
