Kilmarnock teen broke ex-girlfriend's nose

A TEENAGER who broke his ex-girlfriend’s nose after a pub row has been told to stay out of trouble for the next six months.

Eighteen-year-old Neil Laird, of Wallacetown Avenue, Kilmarnock, last month admitted assaulting the 20-year-old woman in the town’s St Marnock Place in September.

Laird initially denied the offence, but changed his plea after the close of prosecution evidence at his trial at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court.

During the trial the court heard that Laird and Hayley McIlroy had broken up only two days before the incident at the Treehouse pub.

Sheriff Brian Murphy heard that the two were in the bar with separate groups of friend and initially spoke amicably.

But tempers soared after Miss McIlroy was advised by another female of certain things Laird had said and done.

In the ensuing confrontation at the bar she threw her glass of vodka and Irn Bru over him.

Miss McIlroy was then ejected from the pub.

Later Laird came out and she tried to speak to him.

Said Miss McIlroy: “He kind of pushed me away, but I just kept walking towards him.”

After a second push, she fell to the ground.

When she got back up, she took off her stiletto shoes and used one of them to strike him on the body.

Laird then grabbed the other shoe and threw it in the river.

Miss McIlroy said: “After he threw my shoe I pushed him and then I can’t really remember because it happened so fast, but he hit me on the face.

“I fell to the ground. I can’t really remember after that. I just remember waking up and there was blood everywhere.”

She was taken to Crosshouse Hospital where she was found to have a broken nose and a cut to her face.

“I have got a scar,” said Miss McIlroy.

Earlier a 15-year-old friend of Miss McIlroy described how she had found the woman lying face down on the ground.

“She had blood all down the front of her dress,” she said.

Last Friday, Sheriff Murphy deferred sentence on Laird until May 17 next year.
